HTC One product photo

We set out to change what’s possible when we released the HTC One earlier this year and as we approach 2014, we’re reflecting on the tremendous response we’ve received from some of most respected minds in technology.

Whether it was your reaction was to the all-metal design, front facing stereo speaker or our re-imagined Sense experience, we thank you and all our supporters this past year.  We’re excited for 2014 and the innovations the new year will bring!

Got a bad gift? Let HTC Replace it with an HTC One

#ReplaceMyGift HTC Instagram Holiday 2013 Contest

Every year, we make lists, check them twice, and then pass them around to our friends and family members, hoping that we get exactly what we want. But then the time comes when we gather, tear off the bows, rip off the paper and our excitement quietly fades away as we realize that we didn’t get what we wanted at all. In fact, it’s not even close.

When that happens, we’re a victim of a bad gift.

This year, HTC would like to help make your holiday a little jollier by giving you a chance to replace that “bad” gift with a new HTC One.

Entering is simple. Just follow these steps:

  1. Follow HTC on Instagram at: www.instagram.com/htc
  2. Snap a photo of the gift and post it on Instagram
  3. Include a comment in the caption explaining why it is a “bad” gift (or a gift that you didn’t want)
  4. Include the hashtag, #ReplaceMyGift, in the caption
  5. Tag @HTC in the photo (You don’t have to call out @HTC in the caption, just tag us!)

The photos will be judged by a panel of gift-giving judges based on originality, creativity, humor, and “badness” of the gift submitted in the photo and comment.

Here’s an example of what we’re looking for:

Got a bad gift for the holidays? Enter HTC's #ReplaceMyGift Contest for a chance to win an HTC One

We don’t want to get sued, so please, don’t  mention or show any particular company or brands in your photos and do not include pictures of  anyone else but you (unless you have permission).

We are accepting entries until 11:59 PST on January 5, 2014. A total of 12 winners will be chosen and notified on or around January 10, 2014 and announced here, on the HTC Blog, on or around January 15, 2014.*

Contest eligibility varies by country. Check here for a full list of rules and restrictions, including those for your region.

Can’t wait to see what “bad” gifts you want replaced!

* NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER. Contest ends 1/5/2014. Must be at least 18 years old to enter. Open to eligible participants in Australia, Canada, France, German, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, the US, and Vietnam only. Six (6) winners will be selected from the U.S. The remaining six (6) winners will be selected from entries received from all eligible participants excluding those from eligible U.S. participants. The Incredible & Indispensable: 5 Must-Have Apps for your One

Top Apps for HTC One max

So you just picked up your stunningly sexy and sleek HTC One. Congratulations! Now, you’re probably wondering which amongst the virtual sea of Google Play apps will help you best put your One to good use. You’re in luck! We recently asked the HTC community on Twitter to share their top five indispensable apps for the One, which we’ve rounded up for you!

The wildly popular mobile photography-based social media network has become a staple in the wake of increasingly powerful mobile phone cameras. Perhaps the first app to popularize photo filters, the collection of filters has increased over time, giving users access to a plethora of photo-customization options. Not much of a photographer? Not to worry: earlier this year Instagram also added support for short videos up to 15 seconds in length. What better way to show off your One’s powerful camera and all of your Zoes?

MX Player

The One comes equipped with a stunning 1080p display. That being said, it would be quite a shame not to put it good use with the occasional movie, right? Enter MX Player: a powerful, versatile, and feature-packed video player. Its support of several subtitle formats makes it perfect for discreet viewing, and its multi-core decoding ensures that you’re utilizing your One’s powerful quad-core processor.

Pocket Casts

Who needs iTunes to enjoy podcasts? Pocket Casts allows users to stay up to date on their favorite podcasts via streaming, or download them directly to their Android device for later listening. Podcasts are sorted through an intuitive, user-friendly graphical interface for easy browsing. Additionally Pocket Casts supports both video and audio podcasts, and has extra features such as variable speed playback, playlists, and the ability to toggle video podcasts to “audio only” when you need to direct your eyes elsewhere.

Google Maps may have set the standard for smartphone navigation apps, but Waze broke new ground by marrying navigation and crowdsourcing. What does that mean for you? It means access to the latest, user-submitted information on road hazards, construction, accidents, traffic jams, speed traps, and other potential impediments to your travels. Waze automatically updates maps based upon information such as traveling speed, or allows you to manually submit information to the Waze community—all hands free. Picking someone up? Waze connects your Facebook account and allows you to coordinate your travels together, or helps you notify your friends when you’re running behind.

WhatsApp is a favorite cross-platform messaging app amongst those who want an alternative to SMS messaging. Unlike conventional SMS inboxes, Whatsapp logs messages received while offline, allowing users to stay connected no matter what. Whatsapp supports group chat, audio messages, and video messages, and also conveniently syncs automatically with your Address Book. Whatsapp is free for a year—after which it only costs $0.99 annually—and is completely ad-free.

HTC One Family – A Spectrum of Color

Everyone wants to stands out from the crowd. So why not do it with color?

Since the announcement of the HTC One  back in February, building out the HTC One family  has kept us pretty busy.

In July, the compact version of the HTC One, the HTC One mini, was announced. This was followed by its “big brother”, the HTC One max, this autumn. Each phone boasts a full-metal body design and ground-breaking new experiences like dual-frontal speakers with HTC BoomSound™ technology, the pioneering HTC UltraPixel™ camera and the HTC BlinkFeed™ live home screen. But even though the whole family’s been introduced, we’ve kept things fresh by steadily introducing new colors to suit just about anyone.

HTC One Family

The flagship HTC One was first introduced in Glacial Silver and Stealth Black. Its sophisticated looks quickly caught the eye of industry experts, journalists, and customers around the world. But as the HTC One family grew, so did the color choices.

At HTC, we know that people love expressing themselves through their phones, and color is a great way to do that. So we listened to our fans and kicked things off with a couple of eye-catching colors for the HTC One: Glamour Red and Vivid Blue, as well as its US version – Electric Blue – which is also available on the HTC One mini.

HTC One Black, Silver, Red and Blue

As we continued pushing the boundaries of design and technology to create innovative and personal ways to experience your phone, we invited David Koma, one of the UK’s most inspiring and creative fashion designers, to come up with two unique designs for the HTC One mini during Fashion Week. His designs, inspired by “Change” and his Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer 2013 collections, were applauded by the fashion and tech word alike. From Koma’s designs, we created 10 money-can’t-buy, exclusive “HTC One mini x David Koma” collector’s pieces. We then gave those phones away to 10 emerging artists that took part in our Twitter competition to promote young  talent in the creative industry. See the winning entrants here.

HTC One mini x Koma

In November, we celebrated the 18th anniversary of the MOBO Awards. To mark this occasion we created something very special – a limited edition 18-Carat Gold HTC One for the winners of the “Best Newcomer Award” sponsored by HTC. This “Gold HTC One x MOBO” campaign achieved a whopping 1.5 billion impressions worldwide!

HTC One Gold x MOBO

Building on the all-metal design of the HTC One, the immense success of the 18-Carat Gold HTC One and with Christmas approaching fast, we decided to give the HTC One a holiday makeover. The result is the HTC One Brilliant Gold – adding yet another dazzling shade to our range.

So the only question that remains is… what color are you going to choose?

UEFA Tech Talk: Size Matters

As the Group Stages of the 2013 UEFA Champions League approach their climax – and with the release of the HTC One max – now is the time to find out how much ‘size matters’ in professional football. From the dimensions of the pitch and size of the goal, to the height of players and the capacity of the stadium and press rooms; when it comes to the beautiful game, size always matters.

Did you know that every stadium needs to have 25 commentary positions? How about the fact that only 14 people are allowed to sit on the substitutes’ bench – and one of them has to be a doctor? Yep, it’s true. Every team has to meet a crazy amount of requirements if they want to participate in a UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League match.

Check out the infographic below to see who comes out ahead in the battle of ‘Bigger is better’ vs. ‘Good things come in small packages.”

Which side are you on?

Five Fun Photo Editing Apps

Basic editing apps are great for professional-looking shots, but sometimes all we want to do is have some fun. Here are some silly apps to play with and edit photos on-the-go, directly from your HTC One.

PicsArt - Photo Studio

PicsArt is a great, free, photo-editing app that allows users to manipulate photos in many ways. You can mask, add stickers/text effects, borders, collages, and artistic photo effects. It’s a great way to give a boring photos some style – whether that be with some silly holiday stickers or a fun artistic effect!

PicsArt 2

#Square - No Crop 4 Instagram

How many times have you been disappointed while trying to share a photo on Instagram because the best part of the photo had to be cropped? Not anymore! #Square is a simple photo-editing tool that allows you to avoid cropping everything out. You can now keep all the fancy detail and maybe add a colored border. Then, you can share the photo directly from the app to Instagram without having to worry about the crop!

This is a silly app indeed. Shape’d allows you to cut our your photos with a variety of unique shapes. Draw or crop shapes on your pictures with forms like a hexagon, circle, cat, or even a camel! (Imagine cutting out a photo of your mom…)

You can also choose the background color of your image and change the opacity. It allows you to write, draw and crop out text with different fonts. This is great one to play with.

Photogrid allows you to take a whole day’s worth of snapshots, or even some old photographs from your phone gallery, and use them to create a story. Select a variety of pictures from your gallery and play around with them in a grid. You have your choice of up to 7 grids in 36 different layouts. This is a great app for the up-coming holidays and new year!

This app is like an upgraded version of Instagram. Not only do you have different filters to work with, but you can edit little details as well.

Imagine this scenario: You’re at a party, you look fresh and chic with your new red lipstick on. So of course you take millions of selfies with your friends. But when you look at the photos, reality sets in. You realize you all look like glowing monsters because of the red eye and you have some lipstick on your teeth (that’s not embarrassing at all). Well, with Aviary you can banish the blemishes and get rid of the red eye! You can also turn your night into a meme or maybe even make a witty cat meme?

What’s your favorite photo editing app that you use on your HTC One?

Android 4.4 now seeding to Unlocked and Developer HTC One

Unlocked HTC One devices, as well as their Developer Edition siblings are now getting updated to Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 5.5 in the United States. HTC USA announced the pleasant surprise on its official Twitter account.

HTC surely isn’t wasting time in updating its flagship smartphone to the latest version available. The Sense-d version of the HTC One saw KitKat only four days after the Google Play Edition got treated to the update, and barely a month after Android 4.4 made a debut on the Nexus 5.

Carrier versions of the HTC One in the United States are due to get the update by the end of January. HTC vowed to do so earlier this month.
