Sony Delivers First Hi-Res Audio Player to Music Industry Icon

Celebrating legendary musician Herbie Hancock’s latest Kennedy Center Honor earlier this month, Sony Electronics’ home audio team took the short drive up to Hancock’s LA-area home to personally deliver the first Sony HAP-Z1ES Hi-Res Music Player. As a pioneer in music technology, including one of the first artists to embrace digital audio recording, Hancock fully understands the benefits of Hi-Res Audio.

When Sony first announced its High-Resolution Audio lineup during a September press event at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, Hancock was there to explain to journalists how high resolution digital audio enables listeners to experience their favorite music just as artists intended.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

From analog through to the digital age, sound engineers and musicians have always pursued the highest quality recording with the best technology available. The introduction of Compact Discs (CDs) offered high quality digital sound and portability. In contrast, MP3s made music more portable than ever, but the files required compression due to storage and bandwidth limitations, and that significantly compromised their sound quality.

Now, with decreasing costs of storage media and faster internet speeds, high-resolution digital music is a reality for listeners everywhere. With the growth of high-resolution audio technology, including formats like PCM (44.1kHz/ 48kHz/ 88.2kHz/ 96kHz/ 176.4kHz/ 192kHz in 24 bit depth) and DSD (DSF, DSDIFF), plus a variety of other music files, the music industry has now come full circle.
